Hot Tubs
Let's face it, buying a hot tub is more difficult than buying, say, a bicycle. Hot tubs are somewhat complex and require some knowledge to figure out a good deal from a not-so-good deal. The key is being educated enough to ask the right questions.
Hot Tub Purchase Checklist
- When you're not using the hot tub does the water continue to remain hot and clean?
- Can you customize the jets and jet system for your hydromassage experience?
- How loud are the jets and pump?
- Is there any programming required for the heating and filtration system or is it automatic?
- After you exit the hot tub does it go through an automatic clean-up cycle?
- Can corrosion occur on the heater?
- Are the controls difficult to figure out or easy to adjust and operate?
- Does the hot tub come with optional features that make it easier to maintain?
- Is 220v electricity available? Is it less expensive than 115v?
- Do you like the seating and are you able to move around in it easily?
- Is it big enough for you and your partner and potential guests?
- Are the components of the hot tub backed by a full warranty rather than a prorated warranty?
- Determine how energy efficient the hot tub is by asking for third-party energy usage data to estimate how much it's going to cost you for electricity. Estimate your monthly charges.
- Is the hot tub totally insulated, not just fully foamed?
- Does the hot tub cover have a safety locking system?
- Are the heater, surface/structure, components, tile, and skirt cabinet included in the warranty?
- Does the warranty compare favorably with other brands?
- Are there any unusual limitations or exclusions on the warranty?
- Has the dealer been in business for at least five years?
- What are the service options and restrictions?
- Can you call customers that are using the hot tub?
- Can I do a "test soak" in the hot tub?
By now you should have a good handle on the basic questions to ask, what to avoid, and how to spot a good hot tub versus a not-so-good hot tub. Once you start comparing hot tubs you'll realize just how valuable this information is and how it could possibly save you a lot of money, not to mention disappointment.
